History

THE PAST and THE FUTURE

Thoroughbreds and their riders have been gracing the turf in York since 1833, with the first official race meeting conducted in 1843, nine years before the formation of the West Australian Turf Club. The Club moved to its present location at the beginning of the century. It began as the York Jockey Club, then for many years was the York-Beverley Turf Club, and is now York Racing Inc.

Trotting races in York commenced in 1922 with the first York Cup for harness horses held in 1949. The historic race for Standardbreds has been run every year since then, with the exception of 1955 when no result is recorded, for reasons now unknown. Since the enforced closure of the old trotting track in York town some years ago, Harness meetings have been hosted by arrangement with Northam Harness Racing Club at their facilities in this large neighbouring regional town. This arrangement will continue for the foreseeable future, but with the construction of a new top quality harness track within the perimeter of the turf track completed as part of the recent York racecourse redevelopment, the club anticipates that racing in this code will return to York in due course.

The sport of horse racing and the beautiful racecourse nestled at the foot of Mount Bakewell have been an integral part of life in the community of York and districts for well over a century. York’s proximity to Perth has ensured race meetings have always been well attended by visitors from the city keen to enjoy a day out in a true country racing atmosphere of relaxed conviviality and warmth.

The racecourse and the Club itself comprise a relatively small but truly significant piece of Australian turf history and we are proud of our place in the Western Australian and national racing landscape. However the Committeee recognises that the operating environment for all race clubs has changed greatly in recent years, and that diversification and use of facilities for purposes other than racing are key to the prosperity and stability of these organisations. We look forward to expanding our range of services and facilities offered, and encourage expressions of interest from all sectors of the commercial and business communities.

We invite you to Join with us in writing an exciting new chapter in the history of York Racing, and be part of a great future.
